In 2024, a spark of inspiration in a Placentia, California backyard ignited STEAM Backyard Learning Pods. Founded by Belinda Flournoy, this innovative initiative grew from a simple yet powerful belief: hands-on, activity-based learning not only enhances educational outcomes but also kindles a lifelong passion for discovery in young minds.
The Seed of an Idea
Picture a sun-drenched afternoon in the fall of 2023: a group of children huddle around a table, their eyes wide with wonder as they peer into microscopes, unlocking the secrets of an invisible world. This magical moment marked the birth of our learning pods.
Belinda's journey to this point was no accident. With 20 years of experience that began as an algebra tutor for college students, she developed an uncanny ability to pinpoint the exact moment when a student's interest begins to wane. This unique talent became the cornerstone of our approach.
From Backyard to Breakthrough
During the 2023/24 school year, Belinda and her gifted Activities Coordinator, Jasmine Rigato, orchestrated a science pod session for eager fourth graders. The highlight? A vivid demonstration of how plants obtain nutrients and water from soil. As they watched capillary action unfold before their eyes, the children were spellbound. In that moment, we witnessed the transformation of curious kids into passionate young scientists.
Parents were amazed, expressing joy at seeing their children so deeply engaged and excited about learning. It was clear: we had stumbled upon something extraordinary.

The impact of our pods has been nothing short of remarkable. Students don't just learn – they flourish, developing critical thinking skills and unleashing their creativity in ways that continue to astonish us.
What began as a backyard experiment has blossomed into a mission to inspire young minds across Orange County. As we look to 2025, our learning pods are set to expand, bringing the magic of hands-on STEAM education to backyards, community classrooms, and parks throughout the region.
